Essential Tides


„Essential Tides“ is a formation of professional musicians founded by the bedroom-producer and vibraphone player Tomas Tides in 2018: instruments played live on stage to a background of mixed housebeats.

With their unique technical setup, they mix beats live only possible before in studios - producing maximum interaction between the musicians and the audience.

„We try to pick up the vibes from the audience and integrate them by improvisation directly into the music we're playing - as traditionally done in Blackmusic.

We combine elements from Jazz, Funk and Soul - the roots of House - into a groovy sound.

Tomas Tides


„I was always a bit of a dissident, always trying to see things through my own eyes and not in the way, our society dictates. Occupy yourself with the things I do and how I do them, and you will get to know me much better than reading a lot of words.“

Tomas Tides was born in 1979 in Basel. He wasn't that interested in music until he heard the pumping. yet organic sounding beats, the incredible strong black voices with gospel influences and the jazzy/funky arrangements, „Right from the beginning, I had a very natural feel for this music, which was something really special for me.“ He began to occupy himself with Blackmusic in general, also with artists and styles from the past, who'd laid the foundation for the more modern styles.

„When we are born, we are very close to our true nature. The feeling of enthusiasm and dedication for life leads us on our individual path - this is how we learn things very naturally in our early childhood. We knew what we wanted, because we could listen to our true feelings. These inner tides, our essential tides, have the power to lead us on our best way through life. But with fake rewards like praise, grades, money and power over others, society begins to manipulate us, already in a very early stage, and leads us in another direction. On a way, we actually never wanted to go. With „Essential Tides“ I try to share a part of my inner tides with the audience. My feeling of enthusiasm and dedication for life and music. It is more a way of communication, a kind of message, than a precise defined style of music. Communication is one of the most important things in life, not only in spoken language, also in all other ways like respect, friendship, love, art, music, ... “
